Bullshit jobs. There is a subset of jobs that the people working IN them ADMIT their job doesn’t “make a difference, doesn’t do any good.” Yet, our culture has set a higher value for these jobs.
Essential work is not a bullshit job.
Before the pandemic, essential jobs had less prestige. And our culture has distorted their value. We have all seen that these jobs… if they were gone tomorrow they would be missed by humanity. They hold our nation on it’s back. They do work that benefits our fellow man.
In this episode, we talk about prioritizing essential work or lowering our standards for what we should go looking for in the job market.
If you want your work to be meaningful or matters. Think about it this way: If it doesn’t directly help someone else, then it could be one of these bullshit jobs.
A survey says that 37% of the people thought their job DID NOT make a contribution to the world. 13% was unsure and 50% of them felt like they did.
This podcast was recorded during the pandemic. And the Fed made some speculations on how bad the unemployment could get. So now on June 10th, a few months later, The Feds predictions came true.
Unemployment is at 32% over 40 million.
If you are unemployed... which 1 out of 5 Americans are... we are faced with a larger issue. How to get Americans back to work?
It used to be that honest work could pay a fair LIVABLE wage. That is no longer the case. The purchasing power of the dollar has decreased but the cost of living has only gone up.
The job wasn’t an identity. There used to be pride in your work. Your life wasn’t wrapped around establishing a career. Most people who have this bullshit job or did it for the money incentives- most of them have high anxiety.
We’ve all been job seeking, taking on certifications, degrees to get there. But we thoughtless about the value we were creating in our community and the joy meaningful work can give to us personally.
The chance of rehiring is low. Now as millions will be out looking for a job. I urge you to direct your searches towards what you think will be meaningful work.
As the job market will be tough for a while. There will be a shift in jobs available to the average American. We need to be prepared for the shift towards these jobs. Filling in the supply chains. The jobs that will be in high demand won’t require a college degree.
